UCEA students attend Peter Vardy’s Candle Conference -
A group of A Level students from University Church of England Academy recently travelled to Central Hall in Manchester for the Candle Conference, hosted by Peter Vardy. The conference was an enhancement for their A Level Religious Studies course and was intended to inspire the students while giving them added confidence in the topics they are covering.
The Candle Conferences feature a debate – often with concurrent twitter polls – as well as whole-group discussions and plenty of other opportunities to share, discuss and complete short written activities. Students are encouraged to engage appropriately on social media, giving them a real idea of what attending an academic conference can be like today as well as the chance to ask questions and find out what people from other schools are studying.
Throughout the day students received a number of lectures from Peter Vardy, the old Vice-Principal of Heythrop College. The students explored Christianity, Love and Law, Love and Ethics, Faith and Reason as well as hearing arguments of how the universe was created. Each of the topics covered in the session were directly related to the students’ current A Level course.
Mrs Silverlock, Learning Coach for Sixth Form at UCEA, said: “The day was really informative and beneficial for the students. They heard key messages regarding exam techniques along with valuable references to assist them in preparation for their A Level examinations in Ethics and Philosophy. I would definitely recommend this to future students!”
Emily Butler, A Level student, said: “The conference was aspirational and encouraged me to go back and do further research of topics I’d studied previously. It was great to meet with students from other schools and get involved with the debate during the sessions.”
