UAW Library Grand Opening -
Red ribbon event to unveil the new University Academy Warrington reading centre
Thursday 1 March 2018 was a special day for University Academy Warrington as it celebrated the grand opening of its new library with special guests.
With an increase in the number of students looking to access the previous library, it was clear that a larger and more modern space was needed. A challenge was set for staff and students to transform an unused area of the building into a new library, a library of their imagining and a resource that would become the heart of the Academy. The dedicated team of student librarians have been instrumental in designing, building and running the area and the support from the University of Chester Academies Trust (UCAT), along with the many fundraising events across the whole school, enabled this project to be so successful.
The new learning environment is accessible to all students before school, during break and lunchtime, and after school until 4:00pm every day. The library still welcomes support of any kind from the community, especially the donation of any preloved books.
University Academy Warrington was honoured to have Councillor Les Morgan, Mayor of Warrington, and David Cumberland, Chief Executive Officer for UCAT, to cut the ribbon and officially announce the library space open for students.
The grand opening of the new library coincided with a day filled with fun activities to celebrate World Book Day 2018. Staff and students dressed as characters from their favourite books and a variety of competitions took place, such as the ‘Design a Doorway’ challenge, which saw teachers decorate their classroom door in order to turn it into a portal to one of their personal favourite books. The catering team created a lovely pirate themed cake which was presented to the winner of the Design a Door challenge, while Year 10 product design students put together an incredible buffet for the event.
David Cumberland, Chief Executive Officer for UCAT, said: “I am so proud of the staff and students at the Academy who have created a wonderful space for reading, a calming place where young minds can wander off to magical worlds. Through hard work and commitment, the students have made this space their own and it’s even more heart-warming to know that this library will be enjoyed by so many students attending the Academy in the future. The young people of Warrington deserve this learning environment and it was a pleasure to be involved, along with the Mayor, in the grand opening, which was so brilliantly hosted by the students.”
Councillor Les Morgan, Mayor of Warrington, said: “I found today fascinating. Many years ago, while I was in school, we had nothing like this. It is so modern, up to date and extremely impressive. The diversity of the books on offer and the facilities available are a particular highlight. I have been speaking with the student librarians today and they are delighted that they now have a space where they can come and complete their homework after school, a space without the distractions of the television or home life. During my time as Mayor I have visited many schools and colleges and this library, which the students have created, really stands out as a marvellous facility.”
