Young Artists from UAK visit Liverpool Museums - 28/03/2018

Young artists from University Academy Kidsgrove (UAK) visited Liverpool’s Walker Art Gallery and Tate Liverpool to introduce them to valuable resources, research and learning experiences available to them outside of the classroom. Educational trips and visits to museums and art galleries provide students with the chance to experience unique learning opportunities outside of the classroom and develop their subject-specific content. The Walker Art Gallery is home to renaissance masterpieces, Tudor portraits and some of the best collections of Victorian and Pre-Raphaelite art in the country. The gallery features artwork from medieval and renaissance, 17th to 19th century art, sculptures, British Art, Modern and Contemporary art. Tate Liverpool is home of British and international modern and contemporary art in the North. Its mission is to increase the public’s enjoyment and understanding of British art from the 16th century to the present day and of international modern and contemporary art. Year 10 students were introduced to the galleries through an information booklet that guided them to different rooms of the museum. Students were then tasked to source specific works of art throughout both museums and form their personal opinions about a range of paintings, sculptures and pottery. Mrs. S Bailey, Teacher of Art at UAK said: “The students had the opportunity to view a range of paintings, sculpture, furniture and ceramics to enable them to start to form their own opinions. It was great for the pupils to see these in real life and not just as images on the computer or in a book. I had some really interesting conversations with the students about the work they saw.” Todd G, Year 10 student said: “I preferred the Walker Art Gallery as it had more wildlife based Art, and the pictures were more detailed and traditional.” Molly A, Year 10 student also added: “I liked the Tate at the Albert Dock because there was a lot of Pop Art.”
